Quotes:

“Telematics is really just a fancy word for GPS tracking and extracting valuable data from the vehicle and its operations. And unfortunately, many people see it as a big brother tool.”

“today [telematics] is used by most businesses, government departments, and so forth to streamline activities and provide better customer service. It's used by public transport, for example, so you know where your bus is and how long it's going to take to arrive. Telematics is becoming ever so popular now for work health and safety reasons.”

“From an operational point of view, we track the traveling patterns of each garbage truck, and the pickup of each bin. Using the data, we can optimize travelling routes to reduce the distances that garbage trucks travel every day and therefore minimizing fuel use and co2 emissions.”

“We [use telematics] to detect and prevent contamination of recycling and green waste in bins, the less garbage that goes into landfill the better.”

“Some of these public litter bins have sensors inside them, which advise us when the bins are needing emptying. And our systems then automatically deploy work orders to the garbage trucks which are traveling along the route to go along and empty that rubbish bin so that truck drivers can work more efficiently”
